Dried Sweetened Green Mango

Unripe mature mangoes are a favorite edible oxymoron. When grown to full maturity, without yet being fully ripened, the fleshy stone fruits develop tough, thick skin and firm flesh with flavor and texture akin to a freshly picked, tart, crisp green apple. Tempted to bite? Just wait…
Trader Joe’s Sweetened Green Mango is made from carabao mangoes, grown in the Philippines. Purposely picked prematurely, though fully grown, they are peeled, sliced, sweetened and dried within 24 hours of harvest.
This immediate processing yields a soft-yet-firm snack with bracing tartness and tongue-tickling sweetness. It’s a bit like sugar-coated, sour candy, but it’s real fruit and it’s made without any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Plus, it’s a good source of vitamin C. At $2.49 for each six ounce resealable bag (equal to 8-10 fresh green mangoes!), Trader Joe’s Sweetened Green Mango are a real fantasy (one good oxymoron deserves another).
Culinary Curiousity: The Green Mango also refers to a large hummingbird, endemic to Central and South America, which is often found in coffee plantations. One wonders if The Green Mango would also be a fan of the green mango. One would assume so!
