Albada Old Vine Garnacha Spain
November 27th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.
Though there’s no legal definition of an “old vine” in viticulture—50 years or more is acceptable to most interested parties. This Albada Viñas Viejas Garnacha meets that criteria and then some. It is made from 100% Spanish Garnacha grapes, grown on vines, most of which are over 50 years old. Many, in fact, are up to 100 years old. Why does this matter? It’s understood that for a variety of reasons, more mature vines yield wines that are better in quality.
This Old Vine wine definitely displays some prime features: It is overall bold—deep, dark red in color with massive black cherry fruit flavors combining with lots of spices for a complexity that is fresh. All these qualities are conveyed with a soft roundness, due in part to eight months left resting on the lees (residual yeast). While some say age is in the eye of the beholder, we believe that the perception of value isn’t that flexible.
See if our old-fashioned price of $6.99* for this 750 ml bottle of Spanish Old Vine Garnacha doesn’t catch your eye… and subsequently your taste buds.
