November 6th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

The word Meritage [MARE-eh-tidge] is a portmanteau—a combination of the sound and meaning of two different words. It describes American wines of merit, crafted within the respected heritage of Bordeaux, France. The wine at hand, Trader Joe’s 2013 Grand Reserve Meritage Napa Valley Lot 63, is, by many accounts, meritorious, with a developing heritage all its own. We’re in our eighth year offering a Meritage bearing our Grand Reserve label – a label we truly Reserve for the most Grand wine offerings onto which we can put our name. Like a classic “Right Bank” Bordeaux, Merlot leads the way in this blend, followed by the ususal suspects: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, this deep-red vin arrives at a balance that proves the benefits of mingling multiple grapes. It’s full-bodied and pleasantly dry, with moderate acidity, and lush, rich fruitiness. Bring your nose close to the rim; you’ll catch whiffs of black and red fruits, spices… maybe even weathered leather. Take a sip. Now the fruit is a little more recognizable. Raspberry? Maybe black cherry? There are also hints of mocha and cheerful holiday spices among traces of woody notes. Such balance is worthy of experienced palates, yet still warmly welcoming to less-seasoned tasters.

You know what else is welcoming? Our price. Each 750 ml bottle of Trader Joe’s 2013 Grand Reserve Meritage Napa Valley Lot 63 is $12.99*. That’s a value that merits your attention.
