Billy’s Shadow Australian Red

Billy’s Shadow Australian Red

November 6th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Some red blends present themselves in such a way that you can’t really tell what’s in the bottle – it’s red, it’s drinkable, it’s all good. Other red blends show themselves differently, highlighting the best characteristics of each varietal in every sip. Billy’s Shadow Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot is this kind of blend, calling out its grapes on the label as much as the wine calls them out on your palate.

This is a 2014 vintage blend from South Australia, harvested late March through May. The grapes are gently pressed, and the juice centrifuged off the lees (yeast), then allowed to complete malolactic fermentation, giving the finished wine a creamier mouthfeel. A combination of French and American oak adds some structure to the wine. In the glass, the wine is crimson, catching bits of sunlight and showing ruby highlights. On the nose, you get cherry, cranberry, blackcurrant, and plum. On your palate, rich dark berries mingle with cranberry, cedar, and cherry, finishing smooth and creamy, with a hint of warm spices.

Wines of this pedigree and quality often come with lofty prices. At Trader Joe’s, we strive for down to earth value, and Billy’s Shadow fills the bill. We’re selling each 750ml bottle for $8.99*, for a limited time.
