1000 Day Gouda

1000 Day Gouda

November 6th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

If faced with the question, “What could you do in 1000 days?” how would you respond? Would you raise a couple of guide dog puppies? Would you immerse yourself in a foreign language so you could converse with an international crowd? Would you write the great American novel? Or would you make cheese?

Some deliciously talented Dutch artisans chose the cheese (thankfully). Trader Joe’s 1000 Day Gouda to be specific. Most Gouda is young and carefree, but this cheese is quite mature and full of purpose. It’s crafted in the traditional manner, using fresh milk from the Dutch countryside. It is allowed to ripen on untreated wooden shelves, where it is regularly hand turned by the cheese master to ensure even flavor and consistent texture throughout each wheel. When it reaches 1000 days, it has lost 25% of its original weight, and has reached its potential as a full-flavored, somewhat crumbly cheese replete with fine crystals that give it a bit of crunch.

When we first introduced this cheese, way back in 2011, it was intended to be a Spotlight cheese, in and out of our stores in a month or less. Well, that happened, and our customers raised their voices. 1000 Day Gouda came back. And it has continued to delight turophiles ever since.

We’re selling 1000 Day Gouda in wedges of about eight ounces for $11.99 a pound, every day.
