Living Butter Lettuce

Living Butter Lettuce

June 5th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

It’s Alive!

Not to fear. It’s lettuce. Trader Joe’s Living Butter Lettuce, to be specific. And yes, it is alive. Our vendor plucks it from its hydroponic home and leaves the roots attached, which both maximizes flavor and prolongs its life – on the shelves in our store, and on the shelf of your refrigerator at home.

These loose heads of large, green leaves are born in state-of-the-art greenhouses where temperature, humidity, and water supply are controlled. Though they’re grown inside, the farmers still allow “good bugs” in (like lady bugs) to prey on any “bad bugs,” thus providing natural pest control. These near-perfect growing conditions yield ideal Butter Lettuce all year-round, with its mild flavor, and tender, “it’s like buttah” texture. Use one or two leaves at a time to add a fresh, silky touch to a sandwich or a hearty burger. Or, if a quick, nutritious meal is on your menu, tear up the whole head (minus roots!) and toss with Grilled Chicken Strips, Heavenly Villagio Marzano Tomatoes, radishes, and Persian Cucumbers for a substantially satisfying salad.

We’re currently selling single heads of Trader Joe’s Living Butter Lettuce for $1.99 (weight varies) in all our stores. We love this price almost as much as we love this product. Look for them in our refrigerated produce case.
