Vegan Tikka Masala

Vegan Tikka Masala

June 5th, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

The combination of meat pieces – “tikka” – in a creamy sauce with savory spices – “masala” – is an Indian-style dish that is popular in restaurants around the world – especially in the U.K. where it is thought to have originated. Trader Joe’s carries a few different versions of Tikka Masala, including the classic Chicken Tikka Masala, and Paneer Tikka Masala, which features paneer cheese in place of meat. For the vegans among us, we also have Vegan Tikka Masala, an option that utilized pieces of textured soy protein in place of chicken or cheese.

A New Jersey-based company that specializes in Indian cuisine makes Trader Joe’s Vegan Tikka Masala exclusively for us. This is the same company that makes our frozen Chicken Tikka Masala, so you can be sure they’re savvy with their spices and sauces. The “meatless meat” comes so close to chicken in texture, you may find it hard to tell the difference. It’s bathed in a spicy (but not too hot), tomato and coconut-milk sauce that is expertly seasoned with onions, garlic, cashews, and spices, and presented with a bed of cumin-flavored Basmati rice. Just heat in a microwave or conventional oven and enjoy. If only everything in life were this easy.

We believe this 9.5-ounce vegan entrée is an incredible value at $3.49. Find Vegan Tikka Masala and a host of other values (vegan and otherwise) everyday, in our freezer case.
