Ciliegine Fresh Mozzarella
Because fresh mozzarella is a young cheese, there is a misconception that it’s easy to produce. It’s good to keep in mind that even if something is easy to make, it’s not necessarily easy to make great. Our cheesemakers, using the traditional Italian style of stretching fresh curds to produce smooth, milky, fresh mozzarella, make it great. Truly great.
Pronounced see-lay-genie, Ciliegine translates to “small cherry.” Trader Joe’s Ciliegine Fresh Mozzarella is, indeed, about the size and shape of a cherry, coming in at about 1/3 ounce each. The milky morsels are crafted for us in small batches by a cheesemaker outside of Boise, Idaho. They make their cheeses using top quality milk from Idaho dairies, gathered from cows not treated with added hormones or antibiotics.
Toss the bite-sized rounds into salads or on a pizza. Skewer with picks and pair with fresh basil and cherry tomatoes for a twist on the traditional Caprese salad presentation. Or take that Caprese out of its comfort zone and add in splashes of balsamic vinegar & olive oil, a few chiles and coarsely ground salt – pair that with greens and some crusty bread and you’ll have a fresh take on a light dinner in minutes!
