Trader Joe’s Harissa Salsa is a fusion of North African and Mexican cuisines, a blending of cultures and ingredients in a simple glass jar. To be frank, we may have taken some poetic license in calling this “salsa.” But it is a bold, intriguing sauce, and since “salsa” literally translates from Spanish to English as “sauce,” we think the poetry works. Harissa, in case you are unfamiliar, is a traditional spicy North African chili paste that’s made from a recipe of sun dried hot red chili peppers, with garlic, coriander, and salt. It’s renowned for its heat and its depth of flavor. Here, we’ve paired it with sweet roasted red peppers, which ever-so-slightly temper the heat.
To be clear, Trader Joe’s Harissa Salsa is spicy. If you like spicy, if you’ve marched in the sriracha parade for the past few years, this is a Salsa for you. It’s excellent for dipping chips, of course – how could we possibly peddle a “salsa” that wasn’t? Try this Salsa with pita chips and a side of hummus – this is a flavor combination that really works. It’s also a delightful topper for eggs, grilled meat & fish, or burgers. And as a sauce for pizza – truly embraceable.
We’ve embraced the idea of value (as we do), and we’re offering each 12 ounce jar of Harissa Salsa for $2.99, every day. You’ll find it on the shelves with our other jarred salsas.
