Chocolate Chip Panettone

Chocolate Chip Panettone

January 3rd, 2017—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

In the spirit of turning traditions upside down, we present Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chip Panettone. We’ve taken the legendary Italian Christmas cake, removed the candied fruit pieces, and replaced them with rich, sweet chocolate chips. This is a very good holiday happening.

Our Panettone supplier begins with fresh, creamy butter and a sourdough starter. They follow the customary method of production used in the Piedmont region, which involves a leavening process that’s twice as long as that used in the Veneto region – for you this means a softer end result, with more intense aroma and richer flavor. All good things. Their process is also differentiated by the use of egg yolks instead of whole eggs; the yolks contribute to that softer texture that our tasting panel found so appealing.

Traditional panettone is studded throughout with candied fruit. We sell astonishing amounts of this type of panettone every year. We love it. But now there’s chocolate involved. We have to come clean… Chocolate Chip Panettone has us rethinking our allegiances. It’s just really satisfying. You can pull a hunk of it off the cake (we suggest taking the baking paper off first) and snack on it. You can cut a slice and put it in the toaster. You can make Chocolate Chip Panettone French toast and boast of your own International House of Toast. However you enjoy it, you will enjoy it. You will also enjoy our price of $5.99 for each 17.6 ounce Chocolate Chip Panettone, packaged in an adorable reusable tin.
