Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

November 28th, 2016—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

One bright, spring afternoon, a Trader Joe’s Crew Member decided to whip up her grandmother’s legendary sweet potato pie as a treat for the rest of us. That one, selfless, sugary act raised an important question amongst the pie-eaters in the test kitchen that day—why hadn’t we ever offered a sweet potato pie in our stores? That day’s impromptu tasting set things in motion. The happy result? Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Pie with a Touch of Maple Bourbon Flavor. And, boy, is it good.

To make the filling of our Sweet Potato Pie—the heart of the pie, if you will—our supplier whips together U.S.-grown, kettle-cooked sweet potatoes (kettle cooking the potatoes helps to replicate the texture of hand-mashing), sugar, whipping cream, eggs, 100% pure Canadian maple syrup, nutmeg, cinnamon, a custom natural bourbon flavor blend, and other ingredients. After the filling gets loaded onto a buttery, flakey crust, it is sprinkled with a toasted oat crumble, baked to perfection, and frozen as soon as it cools. Once you get your Sweet Potato Pie home from the freezer case at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s, just bake it for about 25-30 minutes at 375°F, allow it to cool, and voilà —you’ve got yourself a lil’ slice of heaven. To sweeten the deal, we’ve priced each 24.7 ounce kosher-certified, finger-lickin’-good Sweet Potato Pie at $6.99. Get one while they last!
