Organic Granny Smith Apples

Organic Granny Smith Apples

November 27, 2014—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

The story goes that while baking one of her famous pies, Maria Ann ('Granny') Smith tossed the discarded apple peels and cores out of her kitchen window. Shortly thereafter, she happened upon a pippin growing in her garden. The Australian orchardist nurtured the seedling, and it bore beautiful, green fruits. Funnily enough, these apples, subsequently named for their accidental propagator, are now the preferred pommes of pie bakers. Their high acidity and ability to hold their shape well actually make them ideal for all kinds of cooking. They are equally popular for accenting fresh salads or eating out of hand. Organically Grown, our Granny Smith Apples are a very deliberate bounty at $2.69 for a two pound bag.

Baking Tip: 1 pound of apples = 3 medium apples or 3 cups peeled and sliced apples
