Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream

October 6, 2014—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

In an ideal marriage of Japanese and American traditions, coupled with a Trader Joe's sensibility, new to our stores in 2014 is Trader Joe's Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream. Mochi is a traditional Japanese food made from steamed and pounded sticky rice. It's chewy and slightly sweet, and quite unlike anything else. In the early 1990's, an enterprising Japanese American entrepreneur wrapped mochi around ice cream, and a dessert sensation was born. For years, we've been the go-to market for Mochi Ice Cream from this original source—now, we have a Pumpkin Pie version with our name on it!

On the outside, a pumpkin-hued mochi "wrapper". Inside, pumpkin flavored ice cream, gently seasoned with pumpkin pie spices, and studded with chunks of graham cookie pieces. The sticky, chewy outside keeps the ice cream from melting (for a while—it will melt eventually if left out of the freezer), and makes this treat easy to enjoy without a utensil. Or a bowl. This is pumpkin finger food at its finest. Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream a seasonal specialty, so if you're a fan of mochi ice cream, check this one out before Pumpkin Season fades away.

We're selling each 12 ounce box (six pieces per box) of Pumpkin Pie Mochi Ice Cream for $3.49, for as long as we can keep them in stock. You'll find them in our freezers.
