There are five basic tastes - sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami (ooh-MAH-mee), the last of which translates (roughly) from Japanese to mean savory. Umami can be hard to pin down, yet it is often the finishing touch that completes the dish. A great way to add umami to all kinds of dishes? Trader Joe's Mild Yellow Miso.
Our Miso, made from soybeans, cultured rice, and salt, is the über umami ingredient. As it ferments for 8-10 weeks, it transforms into a rich, concentrated paste - a little Mild Yellow Miso generates a lot of umami! Stir it into sauces and dips, where it acts as both a thickener and a seasoning. It will add depth to pasta dishes and richness to soups.
