Butter Lettuce

Butter LettuceApril 28th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Whether you call it Boston Lettuce, Bibb Lettuce or Butter Lettuce, this leafy green has a slightly sweet, buttery flavor, giving it its name. Some say the butter reference comes from the leaves' tender nature - they melt "like buttah" in your mouth.  Whatever the origin, we find this variety especially versatile.

You can, of course, make a terrific salad using a bag of Trader Joe's Butter Lettuce.  While a traditional Caesar may use Romaine, we think the flavor and texture of Butter Lettuce lends itself well to the combination of savory and tangy components of that classic.  These leaves are flavorful enough, though, that they don’t really need a dressing.  A drizzle of California Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a squeeze of lemon and a quick grind of black pepper dresses these tender greens beautifully.  You can't go wrong with wedges of orange or grapefruit paired with Butter Lettuce - the buttery leaves play beautifully alongside the acidity of the citrus. In a sandwich, Butter Lettuce complements everything from cheeses and sliced meats to tuna and veggies with hummus.

Bags of Butter Lettuce are available in pretty much any supermarket.  But we haven't seen it for our great everyday value price of $2.49 for a seven ounce bag anywhere but Trader Joe's  that's the same price we've had for more than three years, by the way.

*Ounces, price and availability may vary by region. Currently Trader Joe's Butter Lettuce is $1.99 in our West Coast and Texas stores and $2.49 in our East Coast, Midwest and Southeast stores.
