Steamed Lentils

February 3rd—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

The next time you're shopping for groceries, we suggest you check your pulse.  No, we're not recommending that you shop with a stethoscope.  That would just be silly.  It's a different pulse that's on our minds - lentils.

Lentils are a type of pulse, protein-rich seeds that grow within pods.  They're members of the legume family that also includes garbanzo, pinto, and kidney beans. Trader Joe's Steamed Lentils are very small, typically French lentils that are produced for us by a small supplier in Normandy, France.  They're fully cooked and packed in a pouch that keeps them fresh and delicious.  We've always been fans of lentils, but until we discovered this product we didn't incorporate them into our diets as we might have liked - they can take 30 minutes or more to prepare, and we don't always have that kind of time.  And that's why these Steamed Lentils make us so very happy.

You can heat them in the microwave to make a hearty side dish or enjoy them cold in salads right out of the pouch - this saves even more time, because if you're cooking dry lentils and you want to serve them cold, you need to both cook and cool them.  You can also add them to soups for a real treat - they pack a powerful protein punch, and they're just so delicious.  They couldn't be quicker or easier to prepare.  Our price of $2.99 for a 500 gram (17.6 ounce) pouch means they're as affordable as they are convenient.  You'll find them in our refrigerated case.
