Organic Indian Basmati Rice

February 3rd—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Basmati gets its name, meaning "queen of fragrance", from the perfumy, nutty fragrance the rice gives off when cooking.  Basmati is a long grain, aromatic rice with fine texture and has been been grown in India for thousands of years.  Trader Joe's Organic Basmati Rice comes from the foothills of the Himalayas.  There, the rice fields are watered by snow fed rivers that give the rice lovely flavor, unique aroma and delicate texture.

Basmati is a staple of Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, and adds wonderful flavor to a variety of dishes like curries or vegetable entrées.  You can toast it briefly in butter or olive oil and add a touch of Turmeric before cooking (according to the package instructions) to create an even more aromatic, slightly golden-hued rice dish - we like to add frozen peas to this concoction, too.  We're selling Organic Basmati Rice in a two pound bag for $3.99, every day.  You'll find it in our grocery aisle.
