Vegetable Biryani with Vegetable Dumplings

February 3rd—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Biryani is a traditional Indian dish of Basmati rice and spices.  Restaurant menus might have one or two biryani options, though we've heard of menus featuring dozens of variations on the biryani theme.  Trader Joe's Vegetable Biryani with Vegetable Dumplings is our updated take on this classic, long-grain rice staple.  The rice is simmered with aromatic spices like garlic, turmeric, and cilantro, along with vegetables like peas, onions, and red bell peppers.  Raisins add a bit of sweetness and a slightly chewy texture.

The real surprise here, for fans of traditional biryani, are the vegetable kofta dumplings.    They're bite-size dumplings (think curry-spiced fritters or Indian-influenced falafel) that are fully cooked and added to the finished rice.  They turn this traditional side dish into more of a meal, and make this classic completely original.  Vegetable Biryani with Vegetable Dumplings is made exclusively for Trader Joe's, so you won't find it anywhere else.  We're selling each 10 ounce package for $2.49, every day.  You'll find it in our freezers.
