Champagne from Burgundy?

January 8th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Well, yes and no.  According to international law, Champagne may only be produced in the Champagne region of France.  But while the Champagnois hold title to their namesake sparklers, sparkling wine is actually produced in all of the world's winemaking regions.  In French regions other than Champagne, these wines are given the name Crémant.  Burgundy, known around the world for its very high quality wines and traditional methods, lies just outside Champagne and is in fact home to one of our favorite sparkling wines.

Blason de Bourgogne Crémant de Bourgogne is made using exactly the same methods employed in the making of Champagne -- the Méthode Traditionelle.  One fascinating difference is how -- or more accurately where -- the wine is aged.  The winemaker uses ancient underground quarries, with 10 acres of subterranean cellars, to produce their Crémant.  These caves naturally maintain a constant temperature of 53.6ºF and 80% humidity, ideal conditions for creating the wine's subtle effervescence.

Blason de Bourgogne Crémant de Bourgogne is a blend of premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay and Aligoté grapes, and exhibits solid structure, mildly fruity flavor and fine bubbles.  Because Burgundy's sparkling wines are not as well known as those from Champagne, they tend to cost considerably less.  But don't be deceived by the price.  Crémant de Bourgogne is every bit as good -- or better -- than wines carrying the Champagne moniker -- just less pricey.  We're selling Blason de Bourgogne for terrific price of $9.99 for a 750 ml bottle.  Makes us feel all sparkly.

Blason de Bourgogne is currently available in Trader Joe's stores where wine is sold. It is $9.99 unless otherwise noted here: NH: $11.99; OH: $13.99. Alcohol availability & price may vary due to state laws, taxes, shipment fees & other such stuff. (If we could, we would.)
