Spiral Ham

January 8th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

At this time of year, it's not unusual to see lines forming outside toy stores and electronics shops as parents make those desperate last-minute attempts to procure the "it" gift of the season.  We pretty much think that's silly; but on some level, we get it.  What we don't get are the lines that form outside ham dealers. That's right, we said ham dealers.

At Trader Joe's, we have a simple philosophy when it comes to ham (and everything else, really). Why wait in long lines in potentially inclement weather (it is December, after all) solely for the privilege of purchasing an overpriced ham?  Our way is so much easier.  Walk into your neighborhood Trader Joe's, take a few steps to the refrigerated case, pick up the Spiral Ham of your choice, saunter to the cash register, have a bit of friendly conversation with the cashier and be on your way to a heckuva holiday meal.

Unlike the hams you'd wait in long lines for, Trader Joe's Spiral Half Hams and Quarter Hams are uncured, meaning there are no nitrites, nitrates or phosphates added.  They're fully cooked and ready to serve -- some people find their flavor is enhanced when heated, and we've included a packet of glaze you can baste onto the ham if it suits your taste.  They're even sliced for you -- we use a spiral cut around the bone, so the slices stay in place until you remove them with a fork.  And unlike those other hams, ours are very attractively priced at the truly excellent price of $3.69 a pound -- the same price they were last year, and a full 50¢ a pound less than they were four years back.
