Red Pepper Spread with Eggplant & Garlic

January 8th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Writing the Fearless Flyer, which involves tasting all of the fabulous foods found within these pages, just may be one of the world's coolest jobs.  Also on our list of potential cool gigs?  Crayon-color-namer.  It would be great fun to spend your days coming up with names for crayon colors.  Burnt Umber.  Raw Siena.  Red Pepper Spread.  Okay, so maybe Trader Joe's Red Pepper Spread with Eggplant and Garlic isn't a crayon color yet, but it's colorful enough that we think it could be.

Our Red Pepper Spread gets its bright red--range color from its first ingredient, red bell peppers.  Eggplant adds subtle flavor and smooth texture, while garlic and a bit of hot pepper give it just a little kick that complements the sweetness of the peppers.  Called avjar in its native Bulgaria, this type of spread is a common condiment throughout the Balkan region.  Its striking color makes it stand out on a cheese tray, and its vibrant flavors make it a favorite with crackers or baguette slices, or even stirred into pasta for a quick & out-of-the-ordinary weeknight dinner.

We're selling each 12 ounce jar of Red Pepper Spread with Eggplant and Garlic for  $2.49, every day.  This particular recipe is made exclusively for us, so you’ll find it only at your neighborhood Trader Joe's.
