Trader Joe's Organic Quinoa is grown on the edge of the Bolivian Salt Flats, at an altitude of about 12,000 feet. Farmers harvest the crop in the spring, then the seed is carefully washed, rinsed, dried, cleaned again and sorted by color, before being packed and shipped to our stores, where it shares its shelf space with its colorful quinoa cousins.
Trader Joe's Organic White Quinoa is an intriguing alternative to rice, couscous or pasta and is gluten free. Often referred to as an "ancient grain," Quinoa has more than 5,000 years of history, and was so prized by the ancient Incas that it earned the designation "the mother grain." Why all the fuss? Unlike most grains, quinoa is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids in a balanced protein. It is often cited as one of the best protein sources in the vegetable kingdom.
Use Trader Joe's Organic White Quinoa as you'd use rice. It's that easy. It can be eaten hot or cold, on its own, mixed with goodies like raisins and pecans, or crafted into a quick salad with black beans, corn, avocado, and a bit of freshly squeezed lime. You can amp up the flavor a bit by cooking it in broth in place of water. We're selling Organic White Quinoa in a 16 ounce bag for $3.49, a really terrific price, every day.
