Za’atar can refer to one of two things: a species of wild oregano, or a delicious spice mix popular in the Middle East. When the word started appearing in writing centuries ago, authors weren’t clear about which za’atar they were talking about.
So, in the name of perspicuity, clarity, straightforwardness, etc., we’re talking about the spice blend when we talk about Trader Joe’s Za’atar Chèvre. Used in Middle Eastern cooking, usually liberally sprinkled in yogurt or on top of khubz flatbread, za’atar can include a variety of spices depending on who’s doing the cooking.
The recipe we use here includes salt, sumac, marjoram, oregano, and thyme, mixed into creamy goat cheese and formed into small logs. It’s a perfectly flavorful and tangy pairing, indeed.
As with za’atar, there’s no wrong way to use this Chèvre. Go the traditional route and spread on crackers. Add to a sandwich with Roasted Garlic & Onion Jam. Transform your morning avocado toast with a tangy, flavorful layer of this cheese. Crumble it onto fish after grilling. Or, make it the star of a homemade pizza with TJ’s Pizza Dough, olive oil, and mushrooms.
