The Sauces of Summer

May 24, 2017 in Category: Guides

With summer just on the horizon, our shelves will soon be brimming with seasonally essential products: watermelon, salt water taffy, marshmallows, aloe vera…and barbecue sauce. When the warm weather rolls around, we more than double our queue of ‘Q sauces—in fact, you’ll find seven sauces in our stores to fulfill your BBQ-slathering needs between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

We’ve drawn up the handy primer below—and a recipe!—to help guide you to BBQ bliss. Head to Trader Joe's for your go-to, tried-and-true—or, if you’re feeling extra saucy, try something completely new. Marinade, dip, glaze, and baste to your heart’s content, all summer long...

$2.69 | 18 fl. oz | Available year-round

A longtime customer favorite, the slightly sweet, bold, smoky flavor of this sauce echoes the flavors of true Kansas City style barbecue. Drizzle it on slow smoked pork or grilled Ground Beef Patties 80/20 ($4.99 per pound) with abandon.

$2.99 | 19 fl. oz | Available year-round

Worth its weight in bulgogi, this subtly sweet condiment is accented with soy sauce, sake, and ginger, with a kick from gochujang—a traditional spicy, fermented chili paste. Pair it with our Choice Premium Flank Steak ($10.99 per pound).

$2.99 | 19.5 fl. oz | Available year-round

A zesty mixture of chili peppers, garlic, and vinegar is deftly combined with a tomato-base sauce, and tempered with the flavor of sweet molasses. Stir it into our Organic Baked Beans ($1.49 for 15 oz.) for a spicy take on a classic BBQ side dish.

$2.69 | 18 fl. oz | Available May–September

Inspired by classic recipes from the midlands of South Carolina, this sauce offers the bright tang of yellow mustard & vinegar with sweet, smoky molasses. Try it with our No-Antibiotics-Ever Boneless Pork Loin Chops ($6.99 per pound).

$2.99 | 19 fl. oz | Available May–September

Real Kentucky bourbon is blended with tamari soy sauce, molasses, pineapple, and caramelized onions, creating a smoky, grill-worthy condiment. It’s excellent as a dipping sauce or basted on our Chicken Tenders ($5.49 per pound).

$2.99 | 18 fl. oz | Available May–September

Fruity mango is spiced with Chipotle, balanced with tangy balsamic vinegar and pineapple, and rounded out with a hint of salted bourbon. This sauce shines on a blank canvas of Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs ($3.99 per pound).

$2.99 | 19.5 fl. oz | Available May 29–September

This sauce is made in the Kansas City vein using a tomato base and brown sugar, and deepened with hickory smoke, molasses, chili peppers and orange peel. Try brushing it on grilled Organic Chicken Breasts ($6.49 per pound) as a finishing sauce.
