Though they likely originated in Asia thousands of years ago, you could make the argument that peas are an all-American vegetable. You could even say they had revolutionary leanings. Or maybe that's just giving them credit for the traits of their human cultivators - in this case, Thomas Jefferson, whose gardens are said to have included more than 30 varieties of peas.
At Trader Joe's, we don't have that many peas, but those we do have? Fantastic! Like Trader Joe's Sugar Snap Peas; fresh, sweet peas in a crunchy, edible pod - a cross between English peas and snow peas. They're washed and ready to serve, though a quick rinse under cold water never hurts. They're great raw, but some people prefer them lightly steamed, which makes the color even brighter and only slightly diminishes the crunch. You can even steam them in the microwave - right in the bag!
Sugar Snap Peas make a wonderful warm weather appetizer, especially when served with a tasty dip - try our Reduced Guilt Spinach & Kale Greek Yogurt Dip or Guacamame. They're also good in salads and stir-frys. And here's an inspired side dish idea: toss them with a bit of sea salt & sesame oil, top with sesame seeds and roast in a 475º oven for 5-10 minutes. Delish! TJ's Sugar Snap Peas come in a 12 ounce, microwavable bag. You'll find them in our refrigerated produce section for $2.99* - we recommend storing them in your fridge at home, too, so they'll retain their fresh, crisp texture.
*Ounces, price and availability may vary by region. Currently Trader Joe's Sugar Snap Peas are $2.49 in our West Coast and Texas stores and $2.99 in our East Coast, Midwest and Southeast stores.
