Organic Sugar Plum Tomatoes

Organic Sugar Plum TomatoesApril 28th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.

Tomatoes are legally defined in the United States as vegetables when botanically they are fruit (see U.S. Supreme Court, Nix v. Hedden, 1893 - we're not making this up), primarily because of the way they're eaten and prepared. We should be clear that the Supreme Court only got involved in the fruit v. vegetable debate due to a squabble over the Tarriff Act of 1883, not because they were concerned whether folks were slicing their tomatoes for salads or eating them out of hand like apples. In any case, we think they might have made a different decision if they'd been presented with Trader Joe's Organic Sugar Plum Tomatoes.

These little morsels are in the cherry tomato family, but rather than being round, they're more oblong in shape. They're sweet, juicy, and delicious - just the kind of thing you'll want to pop into your mouth, like a grape, which happens to be a fruit. We'd rest our case there, but there's more to say!

Organic Sugar Plum Tomatoes are super in salads (toss them with Butter Lettuce and Persian Cucumbers), make it easy to make a creative Caprese salad - just skewer them onto toothpicks with basil and fresh mozzarella - and perfect on pizza. We're selling each one pound container for $3.79*, a price that's as sweet as the Tomatoes themselves.

*Ounces, price and availability may vary by region. Currently Trader Joe's Organic Sugar Plum Tomatoes are $2.99 in our West Coast stores and $3.79 in our Texas, East Coast, Midwest and Southeast stores.
