4 Kouigns Amann
First things first: Kouigns Amann sounds like "queen yamman". Now that you know how to pronounce it, what the heck is it? Ooh, you really need to try it. Trader Joe's 4 Kouigns Amann are our take on a classic French pastry that originated in the Brittany region in the late 19th century. Their name is derived from the Breton words for cake (kouign) and butter (amann) - a perfect name, really, as "buttercake" is an entirely apt description of these little pastry treats. Sheets of dough are folded over and over (like a puff pastry), and butter is placed between each layer, along with a bit of sugar. As the dough bakes, the butter helps produce a puffy, flaky crust, and the sugar caramelizes, making the fresh-from-the-oven result absolutely irresistible! Think croissant crossed with puff pastry, in the shape of a muffin. Really, you need to try it.
Kouigns Amann are darlings of the food scene right now. They're being featured in magazines, on cooking shows, and in high-end bakeries around the country. You'll pay dearly for these when you can find them, or you'll spend hours in your kitchen preparing your own from scratch. We've worked with one of our favorite French pastry makers, in Northern California, to bring 4 Kouigns Amann to our freezers, making them both easy and affordable. Just proof them overnight (thaw and allow to rise), just like you'd do with our frozen croissants, then bake in your oven for about 25 minutes or so, until they're quite dark. Serve them for breakfast or afternoon tea - they even make a delightful dessert.
