Gingerbread Cake & Baking Mix
January 8th—Fearlessly Archived—Still a fun read; price & availability may have changed.
In centuries past, the Bard's lone penny wouldn't have helped you much. There was a time when you needed to be wealthy, or at least pretty well connected, to get your hands on cakes made with ginger. You might have had to sail across vast oceans or haggle with a well-armed soldier to get that ginger fix. Thankfully, that's no longer the case, because Trader Joe's Gingerbread Cake & Baking Mix has made its annual trek and is in our stores now.
But it won't be there forever. Each year, just in time for the holidays, in comes this deep, dark, gingerbread mix, for a brief period of time. And that means now's the time to enjoy this cockle-warming blend of quality ingredients like molasses, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. It's easy -- mix (with an egg, oil and water), stir, pour (into a pan!), and bake. Unlike the mild mixes we've encountered elsewhere, ours is deep, dark, rich and old-fashioned -- a beguiling, blissful experience for the ginger lover. And unlike yuletides of yore, obtaining it requires no effort greater than a trip to your neighborhood Trader Joe's. If gingerbread is really your thing, you might consider stocking up -- we only bring this in for the holiday season, and when it's gone, it won't be back until next year.
Make your list, check it twice, and don't forget the Gingerbread Cake & Baking Mix. It may be a little bit naughty (it is cake, after all), but it's really nice. Especially the price of $2.49 for a 14 ounce box.
