Yellow Tomatoes on the Vine

July 31, 2014 in What's New

Most of us think of certain colors when specific fruits and vegetables are mentioned. You know, Bell peppers - green, carrots - orange, tomatoes - red, etc. But most everyone has seen (or tasted) fruits and veggies that have been cultivated to display unexpected colors. Our Yellow Tomatoes on the Vine are a fantastic example of naturally bred tomatoes with incredible color and remarkable texture and flavor.

Our grower—located in Canada (summer through fall), and Mexico (winter through spring)—experimented with over 300 yellow tomato varieties for more than eight years before finally settling on this one. Of course, these are non-GMOs, grown using a natural crossbreeding technique—just like all Trader Joe’s Tomatoes. But, it’s not just the variety that makes them extra special. These Yellow Tomatoes are meticulously cared-for in a high-tech hothouse environment. Such indoor production radically reduces insect exposure, limiting the need for chemical pest control. And, the temperature is computer-regulated, keeping plants happy and making this an energy efficient operation.

The ‘fruit,’ as it were, of this process has smooth and vibrant, lemon-hued skin, giving way to tender, juicy, non-mealy flesh. Because our Tomatoes are allowed to stay longer on the vine, the natural sugar level increases, resulting in a flavor that is sweeter and less acidic than your standard red.

We think that these Yellow Tomatoes on the Vine are SO good, it’s quite possible that one day, yellow just might become the default shade of these nightshades... probably around the same time that bananas are turning turquoise. Your 10-ounce package of Yellow TOVs is available now for just $2.49.
