Pane Guttiau (Sardinian Parchment Crackers)

February 20, 2014 in What's New

What do you have in common with ancient Sardinian shepherds? Chances are, it’s not the sheep herding. It’s not a bad bet, however, that you and those herdsmen Italiano would both be glad to snack on Trader Joe’s Pane Guttiau (Sardinian Parchment Crackers). Think of it as our authentic version of the flatbread cracker that once was a staple food in ancient Sardinian pastures.

Our Pane Guttiau—made for us in Sardinia of 100% Sardinian ingredients—results from a process in which bread dough is rolled out into thin rounds and baked. These rounds are then sliced through the middle—making them even thinner. The bread is sprinkled with olive oil before being baked a second time. Finally, out of the oven comes a flat, crisp wafer that is so ultra-thin, it's been nicknamed Carta di Musica (“music sheets”) in reference to its paper-like weight and shape. We finish each cracker with salt.

This super Sardinian snack is $2.99 for the 3.5-ounce package (about eight large crackers). Dip them in creamy tomato soup or clam chowder. Break them into tortilla-chip-sized pieces and melt shredded cheddar on top for Sardinian nachos. Enjoy them at home with thinly sliced Italian cold cuts and provolone. Or, take them with you when you’re working ‘in the field’ and you need a portable, satisfying treat!
