Grainless Granola? Have you lost your gluten, Trader Joe? Well, in a way, yes. But first, some history…
The story begins with one Sylvester Graham, who advocated a vegetarian diet including crackers he created—Graham Crackers. Later, in the mid-19th century, Dr. James Jackson baked sheets of Graham flour and broke them into pieces, calling the result “granula.”
A decade went by before a certain Dr. Kellogg from Battle Creek Michigan crafted a breakfast food of baked, ground up whole grains. He also called his “granula.” Clearly, the stage was set for an epic court battle. In an effort to avoid a costly lawsuit, Kellogg completely renamed his creation, “granola.” The rest, as they say, is history.
Until now. We’re not changing the word; we’re changing the world—of granola, that is. No longer limited to a mix of grains—primarily oats—Trader Joe’s Grainless Granola is an entirely new take on this American classic. It’s a vegan, gluten free blend of fruits, nuts, and seeds that makes an excellent breakfast with milk (the traditional way), an inspired oatmeal topping, a marvelous mix-in for yogurt, and a super-powered, no-sugar-added snack.
Inside every bag of Trader Joe’s Grainless Granola is a mix of dates, dried bananas, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and cashews, accented by a bit of cinnamon, vanilla, and sea salt. The blend gets its sweetness directly from the fruit; the nuts and seeds keep things crunchy. The next time you think about granola, think Grainless. Better yet, don’t think so much; just reach into the bag and give it a try!
