Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets

Gold comes in nuggets. So does wisdom. Why not chicken? It does of course, and Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets are the latest tasty development in chicken chunk flavor and technology.

Of course, nuggets of chicken are not new. The first prototype was developed in 1963 by the Cornell professor and poultry innovator Robert C. Baker. (Clearly, McDonald’s was not the originator, since their famous version showed up as late as 1980.) Since the 80s, nuggets have undergone a number of positive makeovers, including the move from mechanically-separated chicken to white meat chicken pieces, and also the use of chicken that is raised free of antibiotics. The most recent innovation is gluten-free breading.

We start with chickens that are hatched in the United States and raised on an all-vegetarian diet—without the use of antibiotics. We use only whole muscle, breast meat chunks (instead of a mish-mash of pieces and parts) that we’ve enhanced with seasonings. For the batter and breading, wheat flour is replaced with corn flour, rice flour, and a combination of potato starch and cornstarch. This makes our nuggets completely gluten free. They’re also certified to be clear of 7 major allergens, including: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, and peanuts.

And the flavor? As they cook for 12 to 15 minutes in a 425ºF oven, you’ll begin to experience the savory garlic aroma. After a minute or two of cooling at room temperature, you’ll be surprised at the incredible crunch factor. Bite into the crispy exterior, and you’ll taste moist, tender breast-meat inside. These golden-brown nuggets may not actually be “gold,” but when you serve them to your friends and family, they’ll disappear like they are! Try dipping them in your favorite Trader Joe's condiment, like: Spicy Peanut Vinaigrette, Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce, Mango Ginger Chutney, or Low Fat Parmesan Ranch—to name a few options. (By the way, these sauces are not gluten free.)
