Store Leadership


The Captain runs the ship at Trader Joe's. As the store manager, the Captain is responsible for ensuring that our customers have a WOW customer experience every time they shop. The Captain lives the Trader Joe's values and culture and develops Crew Members to be able to handle increasing responsibilities as we grow. Captains are salaried and all of our Captains are promoted from within (from the role of Mate).


The first level of store management is called Mate. This is the highest position that we hire into at Trader Joe's. Each store has a team of Mates that support the Captain in running the ship. Mates participate in all aspects of managing a Trader Joe's — from merchandising and customer service to leading the Crew. The Mate position is perfect for both new and experienced retail managers who are looking for more than just the regular retail routine. Mates are paid hourly and also enjoy two consecutive days off per week.

RMT Program

Highly qualified Mate candidates may be considered for the Regional Mobile Thriver Program. The RMT Program is designed to help us grow future Captains by fast-tracking experienced retail managers through a 12-month training program. RMTs join Trader Joe's in the role of Mate and train in two to three local stores under the direction of a Regional Vice President. We look for candidates with a Bachelor's degree, 5+ years of management experience in retail, restaurant or hospitality, and 2+ years of recent, salaried experience at the Store Manager, General Manager or District Manager level. The RMT Program may require relocation.
